Benefits of Nursing

A mother's milk is the best nutrition for a baby. Human milk has special benefits that are not found in infant formulas and protects babies from certain diseases and infections. The protective elements in a mother's milk will likely reduce the possibility of:

  • Ear infections

  • Allergies

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Pneumonia

  • Meningitis

Research also suggests that breastfeeding may help protect against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Breast milk is also easier for baby to digest, requires no preparation, costs nothing, and provides physical contact, warmth, and closeness, which help create a special bond between mother and baby.

Nursing is also good for mothers by reducing the risks of ovarian cancer and pre-menopausal breast cancer, and building bone strength to protect against osteoporosis. Breastfeeding also burns more calories, helps a new mom get back to pre-pre-pregnancy weight, and helps the uterus return to its regular size more quickly.
